3D VISUALIZATION OF WHISKY DISTILLERY ON FAROE ISLANDS

CLIENT

Faer Isles Distillery is a small whisky producer in the windy North Atlantic Ocean. The handcrafted production is remotely located in the hidden amphitheater look-alike village Vestmanna on Streymoy island. The Faroe Islands lie midway between Iceland and Scotland.

TASK AND SCOPE OF WORK

This’s our second project with this client. However, this wasn’t a typical project as they didn’t have a ready architecture. The Faer Isles Distillery required 4 architectural renders of their future facility for their crowdfunding campaign.

WORK PROCESS

For this work, we have attracted 2 experienced architects who were helping us in search of modern and nice-looking architectural forms, that would naturally integrate into the existing environment.

For us, as this was only a graphical project, the most important was a pleasant visual look at the final images. Inspired by the natural beauty of the Faroe Islands we have started creating sketches of future distilleries.

We have tested many design ideas until we came to this solution:

The schemes illustrate how we were developing our idea. Triangular shapes and green roofs revere to already traditional architectural features of Nordic architecture.

After the concept was done and accepted we moved to 3d renderings creation. For us was important to show the natural beauty of the existing place on our renders, so we paid huge attention to landscaping – in this project, it completely coresponding with the real environment: we have used some tricks to grab the 3d surface of this location from Google Maps.

In addition, we have used Zbrush to sculpt minor details of the landscape to give it a realistic natural look.

Then we started scattering selected plants and grass around the created geometry. For this part, we always use the Itoo Forest Pack tool for 3dsMax.

Lighting and mood were created according to the previously agreed references.

Last but not least stage in image creation – post production:

  • tone mapping;
  • clean up the render and improving landscaping;
  • place a sky and fog;
  • improved water foam and mist;
  • lighting effects;
